Cop under investigation for alleged sexual assault of 13-year-old

Cop under investigation for alleged sexual assault of 13-year-old pregnant gangrape victim

The police are supposed to serve and protect, but there are unfortunately those who choose to use their power to abuse the very people they are supposed to protect.

The Jakarta Metro Police say they are investigating a case involving an officer, identified Brigadier H of the Kepulauan Seribu (Thousand Islands) sub-precinct, who they say is a suspect in the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl.

“The suspect has been interrogated and will be detained,” said Jakarta Metro Police Spokesman Grand Commissioner Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono, as quoted by Kompas yesterday.

Raden added that it’s likely that H will face internal sanctions from the force as well as being punished in accordance to the law.

The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras), who is also overseeing the case, say the teen victim’s woes began on March 13, when she was gangraped by eight men.

The victim and her family were at first scared about reporting the incident to the police, but they eventually did so on July 13 when it became apparent that the victim was pregnant as a result of the sexual abuse she suffered.

“Coincidentally, H is the victim’s neighbor, so he said he would take the victim to the North Jakarta precinct and the KPAI (The National Commission for Child Protection),” said Elang Yayan, head of the Law and Public Relations Division at Kontras.

Instead, H took the victim to his friend’s kost in Koja, North Jakarta, where he allegedly raped her.

The victim and her family then reported that incident to Kontras, who helped them file a police report against H on November 4.

The police did not say what charges H could face for his alleged crimes. There was also no information on whether or not the eight men who first assaulted the victim were ever caught.

The government this year introduced chemical castration as a punishment for convicted pedophiles, with President Joko Widodo justifying the law by saying that there could be “no compromise” when it comes to tackling sex crimes. The government was spurred into introducing the the law after the horrific rape and murder of a 14-year-old in Bengkulu by a gang of men and boys earlier this year.

This viral video of traffic cops asking for durian as a bribe....

This viral video of traffic cops asking for durian as a bribe is the most Indonesian thing you’ll see all day

This video is practically Indonesia in a nutshell, except instead of the smooth shell of a nut, we’re dealing with the spiky shell of the durian aka the king of fruits.

The durian, loathed by many foreigners due to its pungent aroma, is generally beloved by locals in Indonesia and throughout Southeast Asia due to its sweet and creamy seeds. These Indonesian traffic cops clearly love the controversial fruit as well, so much so that they were caught on video asking for durian as a bribe from a driver at a traffic checkpoint.

According to Tribun, the video was uploaded on Facebook on May 25. It shows the point of view of the driver as he drives into a traffic checkpoint and is greeted by two traffic cops. It’s not clear if the driver committed any violations, but a conversation can be heard between the two parties in which the officers ask if they could have one of the three durians that the driver had with him.

At first, the driver is reluctant to let go of any of the spiky fruit, telling the officers that it’s for his wife at home, who is pregnant and is craving durian.

But one of the officers counters by saying that it’s dangerous for pregnant women to eat durian (which is a myth, good sir, but nice try) before going on to ask how much the durians cost. After learning that the durian cost Rp 50,000 each, some haggling between the driver and the cops ensues, which ends with the cops agreeing to take the smallest durian.

The identities of the traffic cops are not yet known, but the original poster of the video wrote that the buah-based bribe solicitation occurred on a road leading to the city of Palembang in South Sumatra.

So in this video we have a traffic bribery, some haggling, and durian – three ubiquitous aspects of Indonesian life. What video could possibly be more representative of the country?

Dogs killed and sold as satay chicken to unwitting tourists in Indonesia

Australian tourists in Bali are unknowingly being fed dog meat and supporting a brutal trade which sees the slaughter of thousands of animals.

Horrifying footage shot by Animals Australia on the popular Indonesian island shows how dogs are caught with nooses, tied up and killed before their meat is sold as chicken satay sticks to tourists.

"When we embarked on this investigation, we didn"t have any idea that we would be documenting that dog meat is entering into tourist areas," Animals Australia"s Lyn White told the ABC"s 7.30 program.

Australian tourists in Bali are unknowingly being fed dog meat. This vendor selling dog meat at the popular Double Six Beach near Seminyak told tourists his product was chicken satay

Horrifying footage shot by Animals Australia on the popular Indonesian island shows how dogs are captured and killed

"We just know how deeply this will distress and shock tourists that have gone to Bali."

Disturbing footage aired on the program on Monday night showed one dog meat vendor approaching a group of Australian tourists at the popular Double Six Beach near Seminyak.

"Just one dollar... satay chicken... not dog," the man explained, showing the group of men a box labelled "sate."

"As long as it"s not dog," one tourist replied.

When an Animals Australia investigator approached the vendor just moments later asking what he was selling, he replied: "Dog satay."

Disturbing footage captured by the animal rights organisation show how dogs are tied up and killed before their meat is sold as chicken satay sticks at tourists hubs

"This is why you have a picture of a dog here?" the investigator asked, pointing to a pictured strapped to his moped.

"Yeah, yeah," he replied.

During his four-month investigation, a man the ABC named as Luke watched as dogs were bludgeoned, hanged by the throat until they died of asphyxiation or had poison forced down their throats.

"Aside from the cruelty, the greatest shock was to discover that tourists are unwittingly eating dog meat," Luke told the broadcaster.

"A group of Aussie tourists enjoyed the dog meat satays so much they went back for seconds. Yet had they known the origin of the meat they would have been sickened."

Ms White, Animals Australia"s Director of Investigations, said the poisoning of dogs whose meat was sold as food posed obvious health risks.

Dog meat is being sold to tourists at restaurants and and roadside barbaques like the one above

"Incredibly poisoned meat is entering the food trade through the dog meat trade," Ms White said.

She added: "This is a profoundly distressing situation. Not only is the suffering of the dogs horrifying, tourists are unwittingly fuelling the trade.

"Most tourists have no idea that the letters RW on the outside of popular street food stalls in Bali indicates that dog meat is being served.

"In addition, mobile dog meat vendors are deliberately targeting tourists on beaches and are prepared to lie about the origin of the meat to get a sale."

Some people in Bali believe dog meat is a healthy alternative, and the belief that it increases male virility and its low cost has seen its popularity grow over the years.

Ms White said her organisation is working to end the savage practice without "condemning" the Balinese culture.

"We have based Animal"s Australia"s Veterinary Director in Bali as part of our offer to partner with the Bali government to create animal welfare improvements on the island," she said.

"This is not about condemning a culture, it is about addressing unnecessary cruelty and seeking to transform a situation of unimaginable suffering into a positive outcome.

"Dog eating in Bali was fuelled by a minority group who came to the island to work in the hospitality industry - it is not a Balinese practice.

"For thousands of years Bali's dogs have lived peacefully in villages with locals - it is our hope that they will be able to do so again."

Viral post about marriage of two middle schoolers highlights child marriage problem

Viral post about marriage of two middle schoolers highlights child marriage problem in Indonesia

Pretty much every unmarried Indonesian in their 20s (even more so for those in their 30s, or older) has intrusively been asked “kapan kawin?” (when are you getting married) at many a social gatherings, but it seems this young couple will be able to skip all of those uncomfortable interrogations since they got married while still in middle school.

On May 17, 2017, a couple from Baturaja, South Sumatra named Muhammad Fitrah Rizky aka Gaston (15) and Amanda Safitri (who will be 15 this December) officially tied the knot. Photos of their wedding ceremony – in which both Gaston and Amanda exuded youthful naïveté (hence looking far, far too young to get married) were posted on Facebook and soon became viral in Indonesia, with many expressing outrage that they were allowed to marry so young.

But marriages like this are hardly out of the ordinary in Indonesia.

According to UNICEF, one in six Indonesian girls marry before they turn 18, which is equal to 340,000 girls a year. About 50,000 wed before they turn 15.

That is despite the official minimum age of marriage in Indonesia being 16 for girls and 19 for boys, as stated in Law no. 1/1974 on Marriage. Even those ages, which many would argue are still too low, are at odds with the religious and cultural values held by many conservatives, allowing for marriages between kids like Gaston and Amanda to continue to happen in the country.

For a Muslim couple, a proper marriage in Indonesia is one that is both recognized by the state and follows religious norms. For this to happen, the married couple must be wed with the blessing of a cleric/official from the Religious Affairs Office (KUA) as well as registering their marriage in the civil registry.

But if the marriage isn’t registered in the civil registry, then there is what is known as nikah siri, which is a type of marriage that follows religious norms but is not recognized by the state. This presents a loophole for kids like Gaston and Amanda to get married, as in Islam, there is no set minimum age for marriage. In its place are subjective gauges on whether a boy or a girl has reached “maturity”, such as having gone through puberty.

Nikah siri continues to happen throughout Indonesia because in that very same law that sets the minimum age for marriage, there is a contradictory clause that says, “A marriage is recognized if done according to the laws of their religion and beliefs.” This protects nikah siri from being seen as a violation of the law, whereas without which it could be construed as statutory rape if the marriage involves underage individuals.

A draft to introduce punishments for marriages that aren’t recognized by the state was put forward to parliament in 2010, but it was never passed into law. In fact, two of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, publicly rejected the draft, with their argument being marriage, whether officially recognized by the state or not, is a great way to reduce sexual harassment and/or sex outside marriage.

Sin plays a major factor as to why nikah siri is still permissible by law in Indonesia. This is perhaps best exemplified by an online group/movement named Indonesia Tanpa Pacaran (Indonesia Without Dating), which encourages members to either stay single or marry as soon as possible as dating, and all the sexual implications it may have, is a sin in Islam. On Facebook, the group has over 200 thousand followers.

What’s never mentioned in the group’s constantly updated feed is the mental, financial, and physical implications of child marriage – especially when it comes to childbearing. In April of this year, Indonesian female Muslim clerics issued an unprecedented fatwa (edict) declaring child marriage to be harmful as it is a large contributor to Indonesia’s high maternal mortality rate. Furthermore, they cited studies that many Indonesian child brides could not continue their studies once wed and half their marriages ended in divorce in addition to child marriage increasing the risks of exploitation, sexual violence, and domestic abuse.

Sadly, fatwas aren’t legally binding but it’s a great step to raise awareness towards the dangers of child marriage.

So Gaston and Amanda may not be asked “kapan nikah?” but they stand as good a chance as any married Indonesian couple of being intrusively asked “kapan punya anak?” (when are you going to have children?) at social gatherings. Only they know what to reply to that question, but hopefully they realize that they aren’t ready mentally, financially, and physically, because they are still children themselves.
