Re: Chelsea FC - Badges' History

This is the the first Chelsea badge showing one of the famous Chelsea Pensioners that gave rise to our early nickname. It was never worn on any shirts however but did appear on later matchday programmes.

When Ted Drake became Chelsea manager in 1952 he instigated a move away from the old ‘Pensioners’ tag and wanted a new image to go with the new nickname, the Blues. While the new design was being worked on this cipher of the club’s initials was used for a solitary season as a stop-gap.

Re: Chelsea FC - Badges' History

Probably the most famous of the Chelsea badges, used for 33 years, this was inspired by the civic coat of arms of the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea. The lion was derived from the Arms of Earl Cadogan who was president of the club and also held the title Viscount Chelsea. The staff is that of the Abbot of Westminster whose jurisdiction extended over Chelsea. The roses represent England and the footballs more obviously represent the game.

Chelsea did not start wearing badges on their shirts until 1960 making this the first one used in that way. For the first few seasons the full badge, complete with circle, was sewn onto the shirts. However due to the complexity of the design several simplified variations were stitched into the shirts during the 60s and 70s, even though the full design complete with circle remained the official club badge. The cup triumphs of the early 70s were marked with the addition of an FA Cup symbol and stars.

In 1986 the club adopted its 4th badge to make the most of the growing merchandising opportunities around football. While the design of the lion and CFC letters was always constant several colour combinations were used over time and the crest was at various times used within circle or shield outlines.

This has been used for almost 19 years and many fans will have started supporting Chelsea knowing no other form. While it has served the club well fans inundated the club’s new board of directors with demands for a return to the old-style design to take Chelsea into a new era, especially ahead of Centenary year.

Thumbs up Re: Chelsea FC - Badges' History

Launched in November 2004 the new badge became effective from May 2005, in time for the club’s Centenary Season. Additionally a special Centenary version of the badge is being used during the centenary year. At the launch Peter Kenyon said: "We are incredibly proud of Chelsea’s heritage. The design of this new badge is based on the one from the 1950s and it was a conscious decision to do this."

"As we approach our Centenary Year, and the club embarks on a new and very exciting era, it is appropriate that we have a new identity that reflects our tradition and can represent us for the next 100 years."

Re: Chelsea FC - Team History

Introduction: Chelsea — A History of the First 100 Years

Chelsea Football Club has been good at celebrating special anniversaries. The year 2005 saw us reach the major milestone of 100 years-old. What better way was there to mark the centenary than by becoming champions of England for the second time in our existence?

Our golden jubilee had been similarly honoured. The club won silverware in the 1960s, the 70s, the 90s and at the turn of the new millennium, but 1955 was the year we finished above all other teams in the League for the first time.

It was also Chelsea’s earliest major trophy. The first five decades had seen the club develop into an integral part of sporting life in England’s capital city with famous players and a large, often full stadium.

Chelsea were popular, but achievement fell a long way short of that now enjoyed by José Mourinho’s team; the team that began the second 100 years of Chelsea history as the best in the land and the biggest football story throughout the world.

Re: Chelsea FC - Bremen arrive with Klose concerns

Bremen arrive with Klose concerns

All eyes will be on Miroslav Klose when Werder Bremen train at Stamford Bridge this evening with reports out of Germany suggesting Tuesday’s opponents have worries over their three German internationals.
Star striker Klose is quoted on Werder Bremen’s official website as concerned about a thigh injury suffered at the weekend. He played in a penalty shoot-out cup defeat against a lower division side.
The World Cup’s Golden Boot holder says he remain optimistic of being available but had the game been scheduled for Monday morning, he would not have made it.
The striker will test his fitness at this evening’s training session.

Re: Chelsea FC - Supporters' Rally

Petr Cech
Player Info
Squad Number: 1
Date of Birth: 20 May 1982
Height: 6 5
Career
Signed: 01 Jul 2004
Previous clubs: Rennes

A new arrival three summers ago who cost more than all the past goalkeepers in Chelsea history combined, Petr has progressed from being the most promising young keeper in Europe to arguably the best in the world. Very tall with incredible reaction speed and not shy to leave his goal-line, he has to be good to keep Carlo Cudicini out the side.
Petr was bought to provide serious and healthy competition to Cudicini and began his Chelsea career as José Mourinho’s first choice.
A precocious talent, he built his reputation at Sparta Prague where at the age of 19 he broke the national record for the longest spell without conceding a goal. Equally hard to beat in the Champions League, over one thousand minutes in all competitions passed without a goal.
That earned Petr a move to Rennes in France where midway through his second season he agreed to join Chelsea for the next campaign on a five-year contract.
At Under 21 international level he was a major factor in the crowning of the Czech Republic as 2002 European Champions while at senior level, Euro 2004 brought five clean sheets, a semi-final and a place in UEFA’s all-star squad of the tournament.
The clean-sheet laden first season at Stamford Bridge was statistically the most accomplished by any Chelsea keeper. A run of 1024 minutes without conceding a goal between December and March set a new English top flight record.
By the end of that season he had his first championship medal plus records for the fewest goals conceded and most clean sheets in an English top flight season. It was recognised with the award of the Barclays Golden Gloves for '04/'05.
Though the 2005/6 Chelsea defence was never quite as watertight as the season before, Petr continued to excel and was a major reason for a consecutive Premiership title. It was all the more admirable for the fact that unbeknown to most people, he had playing for 14 months in pain from a shoulder injury.
With the other shoulder also damaged during last season, Petr went under the knife as soon as the Czech Republic’s low-key World Cup ended. He missed the opening games of Chelsea’s 2006/7 title defence but returned at Blackburn in August in full working order once more.
Frighteningly for the opposition, Petr has well over a decade ahead to further improve!

Carlo Cudicini
Player Info
Squad Number: 23
Date of Birth: 06 Sep 1973
Height: 6 1
Weight: 12st 6lb
Career
Signed: 20 Jul 1999
Previous clubs: Milan, Lazio, Castel di Sangro

Chelsea’s undisputed first choice keeper for two seasons, Carlo was many people’s pick of the Premiership during that time. Super-sharp reflexes, lightning off his line and great with his feet, he can also claim to be one of the best penalty-stoppers ever.
A bargain £160,000 buy by Gianluca Vialli, Carlo built his reputation in England having been knocked back by injury in his homeland. It all started at Milan for the young Italian, the club where his father Fabio had enjoyed a legendary career, a fans’ poll naming Cudicini Snr. the Rossoneri’s top keeper of the 20th Century.
The young Carlo made two Champions League appearances for Milan but none in Serie A before heading out on-loan for experience. But almost immediately a wrist injury robbed him of two years and injury problems kept coming, reducing a career at Lazio to just one game.
But contacts of Vialli remembered his talent so Chelsea, requiring a back-up to Ed de Goey, rescued him from the Italian lower divisions in 1999, initially on-loan for a year and then permanently.
When age began to tell for de Goey, Carlo’s time had come, despite a brief challenge from Mark Bosnich. He was voted Chelsea's Player of the Year for the ‘01/’02 season and was sorely missed during spells out with injury the following campaign.
It was little wonder then that Chelsea bolstered the goalkeeping stock with Petr Cech in the summer of 2004 leaving Carlo with stiff competition between the posts. Indeed he has become the second choice but is the favoured keeper for domestic cup competitions although sadly, suspension denied him a place in the 2005 Carling Cup Final winning team.
Cech's recovery from surgery saw Carlo play the first three games of the 2006/7 season, including to Community Shield before he returned to the bench.
Having signed a contract extension to 2009 to stay and fight for his place, only John Terry has been at Chelsea longer.
