MRT network performance up 30 per cent in 2016 from 2015
Last year, trains clocked 174,000 train-km travelled between delays of more than 5 minutes - a 30-per cent increase from 133,000 train-km in 2015. Published 4 hours ago Zhaki Abdullah SINGAPORE - MRT trains generally travelled longer distances before encountering delays last year, compared to the year before, going by latest data from the Government showing improved train network performance. Last year, trains clocked 174,000 train-km travelled between delays of more than five minutes, a 30 per cent increase from 133,000 train-km in 2015. This was announced on Thursday (Jan 12) by Mr Pang Kin Keong, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Transport, at the third Joint Forum on Infrastructure Maintenance. The best performing MRT train line was the Downtown Line, which achieved 260,000 train-km between delays of more than five minutes last year, up from 45,000 train-km the previous year. The next best performer was the Circle Line which managed to hit 260,000 train-km, despite being plagued by signalling problems last year. In 2015, trains on the Circle Line travelled 118,000 train-km between disruptions. Despite being the third best performing line with 174,000 train-km travelled between delays, the North-East line had a poorer showing compared to 2015, when it clocked 213,000 train-km. The ageing North-South and East-West lines showed the worst performance for MRT lines. The North-South line achieved 156,000 train-km, an improvement from 121,000 train-km in 2015. Reliability on the East-West Line worsened, from 162,000 train-km in 2015 to 145,000 train-km last year. continue reading here : http://www.straitstimes.com/singapor...2016-from-2015 Please don't insult Singaporean's intelligence .

Retiree who fell off Bishan MRT escalator awakes from coma after two months
Published 10 hours ago Man who fell at Bishan MRT station can now move slightly and respond to questions Ng Huiwen Retiree Lim Chwee Leong, 64, awoke from his coma yesterday, two months after he fell on an escalator at Bishan MRT station. The incident was among the more than 60 others that took place late last year and cast a spotlight on elderly escalator users' safety. When The Straits Times visited Mr Lim at Tan Tock Seng Hospital yesterday evening and chatted with him, he was able to nod in response to simple questions. He was also able to move his right leg and hand slightly. Yesterday was the first time Mr Lim had spoken since the accident on Nov 12. His son Lim Ka Hock, 46, said he received the good news in the afternoon when his father's girlfriend telephoned from the hospital. "She was yelling in his ear, telling him about how so many people have been helping us," he said. "He will need more time to recover, but I am overjoyed to hear this good news." Mr Lim said his father had told his girlfriend that he remembered he had a fall at the MRT station. "As for his memory of other things, he will still need some time, but we are hopeful," he said. There were 63 accidents involving escalators in November and December, according to figures from the Building and Construction Authority last month. Nearly four out of five such accidents involved those aged above 60. The elder Mr Lim, who is in a recovery ward, underwent a tracheostomy and two operations to his brain while in a coma. His son, who works as a delivery driver, previously told The Straits Times that he was worried about his father's chances of recovery and future medical costs. It will cost about $2,000 a month, after government subsidies, for his father to receive proper care at a nursing home - if he can be discharged from the hospital, said the younger Mr Lim. The younger man, who is divorced, lives in a four-room HDB flat in Bishan with his father, two siblings and a 15-year-old son. They are unable to care for his father full-time as they have to work or go to school. Several people have reached out to him after reading about the incident in the news and offered money and food, he said. continue reading here : http://www.straitstimes.com/singapor...ter-two-months

Train delays of more than 30 minutes up in last three years: MOT
By Alfred Chua Published: 10:10 AM, January 12, 2017 Updated: 3:26 PM, January 12, 2017 SINGAPORE — The number of severe train delays of more than 30 minutes has increased over the last three years, even as the Government made strides in improving minor delays, said Permanent Secretary for Transport Pang Kin Keong on Thursday (Jan 12). To improve the Republic’s rail reliability, the Government will continue to invest some S$4 billion to renew, upgrade and expand existing rail assets, over and on top of the existing S$20 billion it has committed to spending on new rail lines in the same period, added Mr Pang, who was speaking at the opening of the third joint forum on infrastructure maintenance. Giving updates on rail performance last year, he said the mean kilometre between failure (MKBF) for incidents resulting in delays of more than five minutes recorded on the entire network increased from 133,000 train-kilometre in 2015, to 174,000 train-kilometre last year — a 30 per cent improvement. The Downtown Line was the best performer, said Mr Pang, noting that its MBKF was 260,000 train-kilometre in 2016. But despite all the MKBF improvements, the number of serious delays of more than 30 minutes have gone up in the past three years. continue reading here : http://www.todayonline.com/singapore...han-30-minutes

PUB to take action against MRT contractor over works that caused Upper Thomson floods
Published: 6:15 PM, January 17, 2017 Updated: 9:50 PM, January 17, 2017 SINGAPORE — Sato Kogyo had carried out unauthorised works that affected the public drainage system, and the national water agency PUB will be taking action against the company, it said after it carried out investigations into the Upper Thomson flooding incident. The works carried out had contributed to the flooding, which took place on Christmas Eve, filling the area with knee-deep water. Some of the businesses in the vicinity were reported to have suffered damage worth thousands of dollars. In a statement on Tuesday (Jan 17), the PUB said after the incident, it carried out an investigation at the Upper Thomson MRT station construction site and found that Sato Kogyo had carried out works that affected the public drainage system. Sato Kogyo had earlier been awarded the contract for the station’s construction. “A temporary diversion drain constructed by the contractor within the worksite was found to be undersized, and the contractor did not inform PUB prior to the commencement of these works. “The public drainage system across Upper Thomson Road (near Lorong Mega) was also found to have been altered by the contractor without PUB’s approval.” The contractor, which has been told to carry out rectifications to improve the drainage in the area, will also be facing action under the Sewerage and Drainage Act, PUB said. Contractors may be fined up to S$50,000 for works affecting the public drainage system, and up to $20,000 for unauthorised alteration of the public drainage system. In its statement, PUB noted that contractors must seek approval from the agency and notify it before carrying out any works affecting the stormwater drainage systems within and near their construction sites. This is to ensure that these do not affect the functioning of the public drainage system. continue reading here : http://www.todayonline.com/singapore...thomson-floods So businesses and residents who were affected by the flood can sue for damages .

Track fault at Clementi causes long delay along East-West Line during peak hour commute
Published: 9:39 AM, January 19, 2017 Updated: 10:03 AM, January 19, 2017 SINGAPORE — A track fault at Clementi on Thursday morning (Jan 19) caused long delays along the East-West Line towards the city, with many commuters complaining on Twitter about under-reporting by SMRT. The track fault first began at around 7.46am, according to the train operator’s Twitter account. While train services were still available, SMRT warned passengers of an additional 10 minutes in travel time from Joo Koon to Clementi towards Pasir Ris. At 8.01am, SMRT tweeted again that the delay had extended to 15 minutes; and by 8.25am, the additional travel time stretched to 20 minutes continue reading here : http://www.todayonline.com/singapore...k-hour-commute Don't know why they can't fix the problem once and for all ?

Second flash flood at Upper Thomson Road in less than a month
Posted 19 Jan 2017 17:18 Updated 19 Jan 2017 22:24 SINGAPORE: Flash floods hit Upper Thomson Road after heavy rain on Thursday afternoon (Jan 19). National water agency PUB first issued an alert at 3.44pm, informing the public of flash floods at the junction of Upper Thomson Road and Jalan Lembah Thomson. It added that one lane was affected. This is the same area which was flooded with knee-deep water on Christmas Eve. According to alerts sent out by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), the flash floods also affected the direction towards the Seletar Expressway after Jalan Pelatina, with congestion until MacRitchie Viaduct. PUB later issued another alert at about 4pm, saying the flash floods have subsided. continue reading here : http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/...h/3450424.html Businesses and residents affected by the flood should sue the contractor and LTA for full compensation . Now is raining season .

SMRT sleeper replacement complete, speed limits to be lifted
By Loh Chuan Junn Posted 20 Jan 2017 12:49 Updated 20 Jan 2017 15:31 SINGAPORE: Trains on the North-South and East-West Lines (NSEWL) will run faster with speed restrictions being lifted after the completion of the sleeper replacement project on Friday (Jan 20). Since August 2013, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and operator SMRT have been replacing ageing wooden sleepers on the lines with longer-lasting concrete ones. The replacement project is part of multi-year rail renewal efforts to increase train reliability on the NSEWL - Singapore’s oldest, longest and most heavily utilised rail line. Currently, parts of the lines with newly replaced sleepers are limited to a speed of between 40kmh and 60kmh for safety reasons. With the completion of the project, these speed restrictions will be lifted in phases on the lines, with all train lines to return to normal speeds of up to 80kmh by March, said SMRT Trains managing director Lee Ling Wee. The last of the 92,000 sleepers on the East-West Line was laid on Dec 20 last year, said train operator SMRT and LTA in a joint release. The replacement of the 96,000 sleepers on the North-South Line (NSL) was completed in April 2015. LTA's deputy chief executive of infrastructure and development Chua Chong Kheng said that the sleeper replacement project was just one of many efforts to boost the NSEWL's performance. "In the coming months, we will also see the completion of re-signalling works on the NSL and the third rail replacement project ... coupled with more rigorous maintenance regimes by the operators," he said. continue reading here : http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/...d/3453292.html That is very good . But if there is still service disruptions so how ?

Steps taken to curb flooding at Upper Thomson Road
By Neo Chai Chin Published: 9:45 PM, January 19, 2017 Updated: 7:00 AM, January 20, 2017 SINGAPORE — Sato Kogyo, the construction firm whose unauthorised work on the public drainage system contributed to flash floods along Upper Thomson Road on Christmas Eve last year, has changed drain covers to open ones to facilitate the flow of water and has used sandbags to prevent water from flowing into shophouses. Providing an update after a flash flood struck the area on Thursday (Jan 19), national water agency PUB and the Land Transport Authority said the measures were “temporary improvement works to increase the drainage capacity in the area” since the Dec 24 incident. The sandbags are placed at the edge of the five-foot ways that front the shops along Upper Thomson Road. Earlier this week, PUB announced that it had discovered unauthorised work on the public drainage system by Sato Kogyo, which is the LTA’s contractor for the Upper Thomson MRT Station project. Sato Kogyo had constructed an under-sized temporary diversion drain within its worksite, and had not informed PUB before it started the work. The contractor had also altered the public drainage system across Upper Thomson Road, near Lorong Mega, without PUB’s approval and faces sanctions under the Sewerage and Drainage Act. As intense rain fell over central Singapore on Thursday, a flash flood occurred at the junction of Upper Thomson Road and Jalan Lembah Thomson for about 20 minutes, from 3.44pm to 4.05pm. The Government agencies said 59.2mm of rainfall was recorded at Lower Peirce Reservoir from 3.10pm to 4pm. But unlike the knee-deep waters on Dec 24 that damaged the equipment of shops such as The Roti Prata House, shophouses nearby were not affected this time. continue reading here : http://www.todayonline.com/singapore...n-within-month New line haven't start already got problems .
