Grassroots leaders like to go overseas to do planning
December 21st, 2014 | Author: Editorial

A reader wrote to TRE yesterday (19 Dec) saying that he came across Dr Lam Pin Min’s Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/lam.p.min, and was amazed to see that he recently embarked on a “holiday retreat” to Taiwan with his grassroots people (‘MP Lam, who financed this grassroots retreat to TW?‘).

Dr Lam is the MP for Sengkang West and the Minister of State for Health. Photos on Dr Lam’s Facebook page showed that he and his grassroots leaders were having a “wonderful time” in Taiwan:

The reader wrote wanting to find out who is sponsoring Dr Lam, his grassroots leaders and their families for the retreat in Taiwan.

“If everyone in the photo is paying from their own pockets, then I have nothing to say. But if even 1 cent has been used to sponsor this retreat, I would like Dr Lam to tell us more about it,” the reader said.

Apparently, according to the website of People’s Association [Link], grassroots leaders and their MPs do regularly go for overseas retreat to “work”. They will also bring along their family members too.

For example, from 12 to 14 Dec, Mountbatten MP Lim Biow Chuan went with his grassroots leaders and family members to Batam.

The purpose was for them to meet and create the work plan for next year – “to plan the direction for 2015″ [Link]:

Another example was even better, organizing its annual retreat in Sri Lanka (8 to 14 Dec). Presumably, the retreat was supposed to enable the MP and his grassroots leaders to come up with their work plan for next year also. The MP is Dr Maliki, MP for East Coast GRC. He went with his Siglap grassroots leaders [Link]:

So, the question is, why must these people go overseas to do their planning? Why can’t they do it in Singapore, say, at a government chalet or PA HQ? Who is funding all these “retreats”?

What do you think?
