Suspected lightning strike caused North-South Line train disruption: SMRT

SINGAPORE: An SMRT train travelling on the North-South Line is suspected to have been struck by lightning on Wednesday (May 11). SMRT said the incident happened at 3.46pm between Yio Chu Kang and Khatib stations, and that the lightning strike may have caused a train fault that affected commuters travelling towards Yio Chu Kang Station.*

According to SMRT, the incident caused an approximately 50-minute train disruption between Yishun and Yio Chu Kang stations.*

The affected train has since been withdrawn from service. Responding to queries from Channel NewsAsia, SMRT said commuters on board the affected train were disembarked at Yio Chu Kang Station.

Mr Patrick Nathan, vice-president of corporate information and communications, said: "As a precaution, our engineers also tested the trackside equipment to ensure that it is safe for trains to move over the affected area.*

"Safety is our top priority. SMRT would like to reassure all our commuters that our trains are designed to safely protect them in severe weather conditions.”

The transport operator added that the train service to Yio Chu Kang resumed scheduled frequency at about 4.35pm.
