At the palace entrance, emperor , princes, consorts, ministers and generals were waiting for him.
Pang Ji come out of sedan chair ,went on knees, greeting the emperor and empress .

Feast was held in honour of Pang Ji .
8th Prince and Di qing were not impressed, they knew the reason .
8th Prince asked Pang Ji how he achieved peace with Liao.
Pang Ji lied. 8th Prince smiled cunningly.

At 8th Prince palace, Di Qing arrived when 8th Prince and Bao Zheng were discussing state affairs.

Di Qing were startled by Bao Zheng appearance.
In Di qing heart, " how can this be??? Man with dark skin and cresent shaped mole in his forehead..i had been dreaming of this person recently..."

" Empress Li became confused with memory, this worried palace maids and enunchs which in turn notifed the Emperor who summoned Imperial Physicians to examine Empress Li. They said Empress Li showing signs of mental illness, associated with pregnancy. Emperor became worried for unborn child , he asked Enunch Guo Huai to take care of her.

Pangs were happy to hear that Empress Li was inflicted with mental illness.
Concubine Pang asked Guo Huai to torment Empress Li further .

Pang Ji then asked unsuspecting Gongsun Ce ''which herb can increase the chance of getting male baby?"
Gongsun Ce list out the herbs , then Pang Ji asked someone to buy herbs for his daughter to drink.


Few days later, Empress Li jumped up and down on bed, like a little girl, screaming.. This worried Imperial Family that it was agreed that Empress Li be tied down to bed.

Eighth Prince think that circumstance is fishy.
Why did Empress Li become crazy for no reason?


Emperor commissioned Grand Tutor Pang and 8th Prince, Premier to be chief examiners for incoming Imperial Examinations.
Eighth Prince informed Bao Zheng and urged him to work hard.

At night, Enunch Guo arrived at Empress Li room, wearing a cat mask, force feed her stonger dose of medicine ..

Pang Ji summoned one Imperial Physician and offer him bribes so that he would lie to Emperor that there is something wrong with foetus inside Empress Li which caused her to become mad and that it is best not to make this child crown prince. Emperor was upset.
Then 1 month later, Emperor heard that Concubine Pang was pregnant.
Emperor was happy and shower attention on Concubine Pang , and promised her if she bore him a son, she would be Empress and her son be crown prince.
8th Prince heard that, he was suspicious and formed conspiracy theory that Empress Li illness had something to do with Pang Ji and his family..

At night , someone in black shoot an arrow thru Grand Tutor's study room. When he entered the room, he saw the arrow pierced on the wall, with paper attached to ths arrow.

He read the message which instructed him to go to ruined temple , next to the Liao border to see someone, he saw the seal chopped on the paper. He knew it was someone from Liao Ruling Family.

Next day , he went to the ruined temple escorted by his trusted men.
He saw three of them, sporting moustache and beards, totally alien to Song China culture.
One of them , indentify himself as Tuoerba, senior socerer, from Liao.
Tuoerba: I am sent by His Highness, the Great King of Liao to assist you.
Grand Tutor : good good. I want you to make Empress of Song give birth faster.
Tuoerba: no problem, she will give birth in 3 days time.
Grand Tutor thanked these evil priests.
(this scenario derived from Justice Bao 1993 , in which Pang Tai Shi used fox spirit to deceive Imperial family.)

He then went to Concubine Pang's palace, and told her everything. She then summoned Guo Huai, to follow their instructions.
At night, Guo Huai in cat mask, went in Empress Li's room, hid dead leopard cat in the corner.
then molested Empress Li, who was tied to the bed, he groping her breasts, before he left.

Tuoerba and his assistants, sat on altar in the ruined temple, started chanting.. and Empress Li felt sweaty.
2 days later, Empress Li was in pain, maids saw her in blood, they understand it was a sign that she was going to give birth.

They quickly went to inform Emperor ..

Emperor was shocked and wondered why so early . Nevertheless, he rushed to the palace wth his couriers.

At the waiting room, Emperor was anxious .
In the Empress room, Enunch Guo and his submissive sex partner, Hou Zhu standing outside the room covered by a curtain.
In fact, Guo Huai had bribed midwife and her family was held hostage by Pang's trusted men.
When midwife come out, with a baby with deformed face. (he was suffering from Down Syndrome), and Guo Huai took a baby and asked midwife to carry dead leopard cat to see Emperor. Guo Huai asked Hou Zhu to carry a baby to river bank to see Grand Tutor.

In the midst of walking Hou Zhu changed her mind as she was gulit stricken..
She decide to run away with the baby....

Grand Tutor Pang was sitting comfortably in sedan chair, with his retinue of soldiers, thinking comfortably that he was on his way to dominate the Song Court. Once his grandson was born and be crowned as crown prince, he should plan his next move- kill the Emperor Zhenzong and 8th Prince.

After a while, Grand Tutor Pang asked his man,'' where is the maid carrying baby?"

His man told him that no sign..
He opened the curtain and get out of sedan chair, looking so anxiously..

Then horse rider arrived , saying he was sent by Eunuch Guo, to inform you that Hou Zhu and baby had disappeared..
He was so perplexed that he gave orders to his soldiers to search the route ..


He return to Concubine Pang's palace, scolding Guo Huai for being so careless.

He worried that Hou Zhu would delivered baby to 8th Prince, therefore he ordered his highly skilled men to keep watch on entrance , back entrance, to kill Hou Zhu on sight.

Emperor was shocked to see the cat instead of human .
He was so furious . and he ordered that Empress Li be downgraded and sent to Cold Palace. Empress Li jumped up and down , like a child, laughing..

Emperor was very sad to see her in such state.
8th Prince was so upset because he knew that someone had set Empress Li up and vowed to make detailed investigation.

Hou Zhu carrying a baby. walking thru dense jungle, she knew that it is dangerous to go to 8th Prince Palace because the path was watched by Eunuch Guo's men..
She decided to seek shelter in country side where her parents formerly lives.
She look at baby saying " your highness, I decide to take care of you. It is difficult for you to go back to palace, looking like that ." she name him, Shao Zi.. and decide to set up stall selling noodles . She would carry him on his back, cooking noodles , serving customers. some customers make remarks on his look. Hou Zhu was upset that her customer said it was his misdeeds in prevous life or her misdeed in previous lift that she got this kid.
She cannot tell the world that he is actually crown prince. because if words get out, they would be hunted down.

Bao Zheng , with four brothers Wang, Ma,Zhao, Zhang , were on the way to Imperial Exam centre, where people was shocked by his appearance.

Nevertheless, he sat for exams.
Few hours later, all exams scripts were sent to 8th Prince, Grand Tutor, and Premier for review and grading.
8th Prince recognise Bao Zheng's hardwriting,and read answers and was impressed with answers. He gave him top marks . (grand tutor and premier let 8th Prince had the ways because 8th Prince rank higher and court officials just deferred to him.)

When examination results announced few days later, four brothers came to Bao Zheng and congrats him.
He was summoned to palace to see Emperor and court officials ,including eighth prince..

Emperor was shocked by his appearance , so do court officials ..Eighth Prince simply drink tea,eat fruits..

Emperor asked him questions and was so impressed by his intelligence and knowledge of Song Law. and decide to make him an 8th grade magistrate in a small town.
At Eight Prince Palace, 8th Prince congrats Bao Zheng and urged him to do well, so that he can report to Emperor and promote him ..
Bao Zheng thanks Eight Prince, and latter summoned four brothers ,making him senior constables to assist former.
Wang Chao, Ma Han , Zhang Long, Zhao Hu, thanks 8th Prince and also thanks their mentor- General Zhan Zhao.

Bao Zheng sit on sedan chair, with 4 senior constables and a company of constables set off to that town.

People at this small town, were lining up to welcome this new magistrate.
When he came out of sedan chair, people were shocked to see black face, red official robe,.. One remarked that Bao Zheng looked like Zhong Kui from Tang Dynasty.

Some rich town people offer him money he refused to accept and said firmly he treat all town residents equally , doesn't matter that they came from rich or poor families. If they commit crime, they had to be punish severely.

People were impressed , however, one secret agent from 8th Prince, decide to wait and see.

At court, he interview prisoners and review the cases. He found some cases questionable and decide to hold re-trial before the public. He found the right culprit who is from rich family and sentence him, freed the prisoner and compensate him. People were impressed.
these were reported to 8th Prince, who was impressed and convinced that he was the right person to investigate Pang family, and sighed that first born Prince was yet to be found..

Murder had took place in small town and Bao Zheng handle the case. He worked hard , review eyewitness testimonies, asked for medical reports..
People were impressed because all magistrates settle case very quickly, never asked for coroners, doctors..

Meanwhile, Gongsun Ke, sitting in nice office, cannot go out,keep under watch by Pang's men.
He wanted to go out to see the scenary but was denied by Pang's men.
Pang Fei yan seduced him so that he won't think of going out.
If he knew that his advice cause harm to Empress Li, he would be troubled..

Few months later, Concubine Pang belly got bigger and would give birth in a month's time.
Emperor Zhenzong devoted his time on her , every night, and told maids and enunch to take good care of her. Pang Ji was pleased.

Pang Ji planned to have Zhenzong killed after his daughter give birth, then killed Eighth Prince, so that he would be sole regent. However, he would not get his way, you will read later.

Bao Zheng's method of handling complex cases become well known to other provinces. Eighth Prince was pleased and plan to recommend him for promotions.

King of Gaoli (Korea), sent msg to Emperor Zhenzong that he offered golden eagle so that Song and Gaoli would enjoy good relationship.

When envoy from Gaoli arrived 3 weeks later, he remove the cover and was surprised to see cock instead of golden eagle.
He suddenly kneeled before Emperor Zhenzong, explaining..
Grand Tutor Pang suggested that Prince of Zheng was responsible as the envoy and his retinue must passed thru Zhengnan region which was Prince of Zheng's base and recommended to Emperor that he summoned Prince Zheng back for questioning. He furthermore suggested that Prince of Zheng bore grudge against Song Dynasty for seizing his homeland, and he wanted to rebuild Zhou Dynasty. Eighth Prince dispute this as he knew the current Prince Zheng, he love peace and paid monthly tribute to Song Dynasty on time. He suggested sending Bao Zheng to investigate. Emperor Zhenzong agreed with his brother.
Pang Ji look angry as he planned to create chaos among provincial princes whose forethers was the emperors of 5 Dynasties before Zhao Kuang yin and his brother Zhao Guangyi conquered these states with able strategist named Zhao Pu. (Zhao Kuangyin become first Emperor, Song Taizu, his younger brother , Guangyi become 2nd Emperor Song Taizong, and Zhao Pu become first Prime Minister of Song.)


Bao Zheng was in yamen studying court cases, when Zhang Long came in to report that General Zhan Zhao came .
Bao Zheng received Zhan Zhao in office, and Zhan Zhao came with a message from Eighth Prince, " Bao Zheng was appointed Inspector to investigate missing golden eagle case and he was to set off to Zhengnan immediately."
Zhan Zhao then presented Bao Zheng with a golden token from Eighth Prince.

At palace, eighth Prince stared at the moon, hoping that Bao Zheng can solve this case and get promoted so that he can investigate influential and rich Pang family..
