He was harsh, intolerant, machiavellian, repressive, fierce and authoritarian at times. He locked up dissidents and sued political oppositions.
He was not right all the time, and he received fair amount of criticisms.

Totally agree. Taiwan enjoyed economic prosperity under harsh rulership (which had the support of big brother USA) which even had martial law imposed for decades. But nowadays, Taiwanese lament at how their country has stagnated compared to us.

Agree with you that Mod should delete this thread. Our social fabric was painstakingly built to ensure racial and religious harmony amongst ourselves, and can be so fragile. We don't need idiots to play the "racial card"
He is one man that deserved my respect. The younger generation may not know him well but I hope they will at least respect and learn what he has done for us, Singaporeans. He has walked the walk and I wish him rest in peace.

Yet how many countries actually progress from third world to first in just forty years? Let alone a small, resource-less country with different ethnic groups.. Everyone of us has the chance to be successful and get to chiong.
Even his harshest critics acknowledge his achievements and his legacy-- a small but prosperous and modern Singapore.
For that, he deserves the highest recognition.

TS, you r right...他是强人，不是完人...What he did for Singapore is remarkable. I have no doubt of his strong love for this small country & her people...Singapore is his abiding passion...For those self righteous who criticized his way of governing this country, crushing his opponents bla bla bla, I doubt your love for this little red dot is even 10% of LKY's. So stop being critical as if you r a victim or a most righteous person.
